Diesel smog testing in Simi Valley

California requires smog checks on most diesel vehicles, just like gasoline vehicles. We're equipped and licensed to perform diesel smog inspections on any DMV-required diesel — pickups, SUVs, vans, and light commercial vehicles.

Our diesel smog test follows the same OBD II protocol as gasoline vehicles for 1998-and-newer diesels. The check is straightforward, takes about 15–20 minutes, and produces an electronic certificate that goes straight to the DMV.

Which diesels need a smog check?

  • Model year 1998 and newer diesel vehicles
  • With a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 14,000 lbs or less

Older diesels (1997 and earlier) and heavy-duty diesels over 14,000 lbs GVWR are exempt from California's standard smog check program. If you're not sure whether yours qualifies, call us at (805) 526-9716 with your vehicle's year and we'll let you know.

We Smog Diesel — yes, all of them

If you've been turned away at other Simi Valley shops because they don't smog diesels, you've come to the right place. Our station is fully set up for diesel testing.

Hybrid smog testing

Hybrid vehicles (Toyota Prius, Honda Insight, Ford Fusion Hybrid, etc.) need smog checks just like regular gasoline vehicles. The test is the same OBD II inspection — we plug into your hybrid's diagnostic port, read the emissions data, do the visual inspection, and issue the certificate.

Don't worry about your hybrid being "too new" or having "weird systems" — we test hybrids regularly and the process is essentially identical to a normal smog check.

Plug-in hybrids and EVs

Pure electric vehicles (Tesla, Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt, etc.) are exempt from California smog checks — no test needed. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) like the Chevy Volt or Toyota RAV4 Prime do need smog checks because they still have an internal combustion engine on board.

Frequently asked questions

Are diesel smog tests harder to pass than gas?

For modern diesels (1998+), the test is essentially the same OBD II inspection that gas vehicles get. Pass rates are similar. Older diesels with high mileage may be more prone to issues, but we'll show you exactly what failed if it does.

Do you test commercial diesels?

We test diesel vehicles up to 14,000 lbs GVWR. That covers most pickups, vans, and light commercial trucks. Heavy-duty commercial diesels above that weight follow a different testing program (CHP/BAR HDVIP).

How is hybrid smog testing different?

It's essentially the same. Hybrids with internal combustion engines need a standard OBD II test. The hybrid systems don't affect the smog test — only the gasoline engine portion is tested.

Will the test trigger any hybrid system warnings?

No. The OBD II port reading is passive and won't affect any of your hybrid's systems.

I have a Tesla / EV. Do I need a smog check?

No. Pure battery-electric vehicles are exempt from California smog checks. The DMV will not require one for renewal.
